Background: Presidio of Monterey Main Post Cemetery was established at its current location in 1904, after earlier burials (dating back to 1849) near the post headquarters were transferred to the Presidio of San Francisco. Since then, it has served as the final resting place for servicemembers, their families, and others connected to the post. In 2010, the cemetery was rededicated following a major restoration effort that included headstone realignment, new irrigation, and landscaping improvements.
