Background: Rose Hills Memorial Park traces its origins to 1914 when local businessman Augustus Gregg and other area entrepreneurs established what was then called Whittier Heights Memorial Park on roughly 18 paved acres of the historic Rancho Paso de Bartolo land grant. In 1917 it built what was only the second public mausoleum in California, and a major expansion beginning in 1928 transformed the small cemetery into a sprawling memorial park. Over the decades it grew its services and facilities—incorporating chapels, gardens and crematoria—to become, today, one of the largest single-operated cemeteries in North America.
