Background: Woodlawn Cemetery was established in 1884 as one of the city’s earliest formal burial grounds. Originally a modest rural cemetery, it expanded and modernized throughout the 20th century with landscaped grounds, mausoleums, and memorial gardens. It became the final resting place for many notable figures from Los Angeles and the entertainment industry. In 1897, the cemetery was deeded to the City of Santa Monica by Juan José Carrillo, a prominent local figure and member of one of the city’s founding families, who had received the land from his aunt, Arcadia Bandini de Stearns Baker, a wealthy Californio landowner. Today, Woodlawn remains one of the few municipally owned cemeteries in California.
