Background: Founded on a parcel of the former Rancho San Jose de Buenos Ayres, the site of Westwood Village began receiving burials in the 1880s and was officially established in 1905 under the name "Sunset Cemetery." Over the following decades it grew modestly, and in 1926 the name was changed to Westwood Memorial Park. In the late 1950s the funeral-service firm of Pierce Brothers acquired the cemetery, introducing modern mausoleums, a chapel, and full mortuary services under the new title "Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary." Despite its small size—just a few acres in what became one of L.A.’s most built-up neighborhoods—the cemetery has become a landmark of the city’s mortuary culture and a final resting place for many of Hollywood’s luminaries.
