Background: Los Angeles National Cemetery was established in 1889 with its first interment occurring just days before its official dedication on May 22 of that year. Originating as part of the Pacific Branch of the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers—founded in 1887 on land donated by Senator John P. Jones and Arcadia B. de Baker—the cemetery began with 20 acres in 1890 and has since expanded to over 127 acres. In 1973, it was transferred from the Veterans Administration Medical Center to the National Cemetery System. Notable for its Spanish Revival-style buildings constructed by the Works Progress Administration in 1939–1941, the site features a unique indoor columbarium and the Bob Hope Memorial Chapel.
