Background: Long Beach Municipal Cemetery originated as a burial ground for Bixby Ranch employees and was formerly known as Signal Hill Cemetery. The land later became part of Rancho Los Cerritos before being purchased by William Erwin Willmore, Long Beach's founder.
On July 10, 1900, the City of Long Beach assumed operation and maintenance of the 3.67-acre cemetery from the Long Beach Cemetery Association. William Willmore became the first notable burial when he was interred there in 1901, establishing its significance as the final resting place for the city's founder.
Today, the 4.3-acre municipal cemetery is maintained by the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department and continues to serve as the burial site for many of Long Beach's prominent historical figures.
