Background: Several Catalina Island pioneers are buried in the cemetery, as are over 1,100 people. Notable interments include Doodles Weaver and “Chicken Johnny” Brinkley. The cemetery, established in 1889, has undergone various renovations and maintenance efforts over the years. In 1960, the Avalon Lions Club undertook a project to clean and enclose the cemetery, installing a new gate and sign, enhancing its appearance and accessibility.
