Background: The West Side Cemetery District was officially formed by the Kern County Board of Supervisors in November 1930 under the Public Cemetery Enabling Act of 1909. Before this, burials took place at Midway Cemetery in South Taft. Land for the new cemetery was acquired in April 1932, and development began later that year. The first burial occurred on April 3, 1933. The cemetery was officially dedicated on October 30, 1933. Over the decades, the cemetery expanded several times, adding acreage, buildings, and a mausoleum. It remains governed by a five-member Board of Trustees and operates under California's Public Health and Safety Code.
