Background: The Delano Cemetery began in 1869 when the Central Pacific Railroad established the original burial ground near 11th Avenue and Glenwood Street. Financial difficulties halted railroad construction, stranding Chinese laborers who later died in a cholera epidemic and were buried in a common grave.

In 1888, Southern Pacific Railroad deeded ten acres at the current cemetery location to the Delano community. August Borel was believed to be the first resident buried there. After 1906, remains from the original cemetery were relocated to the present site, though the San Francisco earthquake destroyed railroad records of early burials.

Delano's city council managed the cemetery after incorporation in 1915. The North Kern Cemetery District was officially established on December 29, 1938, following a petition with 1,385 signatures. Today, the district encompasses 311 square miles and serves Delano, McFarland, and Pond communities.
