Background: Bakersfield National Cemetery was established through the National Cemetery Expansion Act of 2003, which authorized a new cemetery in the Bakersfield area. Located in the historic White Wolf area of the Tehachapi Mountains, the land was originally part of the 1843 Mexican land grant known as Rancho el Tejon and later became part of the expansive Tejon Ranch under General Edward F. Beale in the 19th century. In response to the expansion act, the Tejon Ranch Company donated 500 acres for the cemetery, and the land transfer was finalized in 2008. The first interments took place in July 2009, marking the official opening of the cemetery.
