Cemeteries in Amador County (County)

Amador County, California, was established in 1854 from parts of Calaveras and El Dorado Counties and named after José María Amador, a Californio rancher and miner. Originally inhabited by the Miwok people, the area came under Spanish and then Mexican control before the U.S. annexation of California in 1850.

Amador County gained prominence during the California Gold Rush, drawing settlers of European descent, particularly immigrants from Italy, Ireland, and Germany, who established mining towns like Jackson, Sutter Creek, and Amador City. The region transitioned from placer mining to hard rock mining, becoming one of the richest quartz mining areas in the state. As mining declined, viticulture and agriculture took hold.

Today, Amador remains known for its Gold Rush history and thriving wine industry. Historic cemeteries such as Jackson Pioneer Cemetery and Amador City Cemetery reflect the legacy of the county’s early settlers and mining communities.
