Background: St. Mary Cemetery, founded in 1863, was the first cemetery established in the community of Oakland. Located in what was then the outskirts of the city, and meeting the needs of only one parish, the parishes and the cemetery grew simultaneously. The cemetery currently stretches across 42 acres.
