Background: Mount Eden Cemetery in Hayward, California, was established on April 13, 1861, by residents of Eden Township who formed a Cemetery Association to manage the burial grounds. Initially funded by community contributions, the cemetery began with one acre of land donated by Christian Bothsow. Over the years, it expanded through additional land purchases and was maintained through volunteer leadership and modest lot fees. The cemetery served a diverse community, including early pioneers, Chinese and Japanese burials, and later generations. By 1961, it marked its centennial with third-generation descendants on the board.
