Background: The history of St. Joseph's Cemetery begins in the early 1900s but the first burial listed is 1862. Many early Mission San Jose pioneers and settlers are buried here.
Hundreds of bodies had been interred in unmarked graves here going back a hundred years. Beginning in 2007, many of those graves were removed when the Parish sold the cemetery to a housing developer. Bodies were removed through 2013. There are estimated to be another 200-300 bodies still interred, but now residing beneath newly-built homes.
What still remains of the cemetery are said to be plots of wealthy families.
