Background: Mission San Jose was founded in 1797. Each mission maintained its own cemetery, which was always located on mission grounds, usually next to the chapel.
Once Spanish settlers inhabited the area, they spread viral disease to Native people who had never developed a tolerance. Tens of thousands of natives died. Those who had been baptized into the Church were often buried in mission graveyards, yet without any kind of markers. Their bodies were later exhumed to make way for more burials.
