Background: Fort Smith National Cemetery in Sebastian County, Arkansas, traces its origins to the early 19th century, when Fort Smith was established in 1817 to protect settlers and mediate conflicts between Native American tribes. The original cemetery likely began around 1819 with the burial of Fort Smith’s surgeon. After the Army returned in 1838, the cemetery was expanded, and during the Civil War, over 400 Confederate soldiers were buried there. Following Union reoccupation in 1863, the site was designated a national cemetery in 1867, marking its enduring role in military and regional history.
