Cemeteries in Sebastian County (County)

Sebastian County, located in western Arkansas along the Oklahoma border, was established in 1851 and named after U.S. Senator William K. Sebastian.

The region was originally home to Indigenous peoples, including the Osage and Caddo, before American settlers—largely of Scots-Irish, English, and German descent—moved in during the 19th century. Fort Smith, the county's largest city and an important frontier military post, played a key role during westward expansion and the Civil War. The area developed rapidly with coal mining, railroads, and manufacturing. Today, Sebastian County is home to a diverse population, including growing Latino and Asian communities.

Its cemeteries reflect this varied history, with historic burial grounds such as the Fort Smith National Cemetery, Catholic and Protestant cemeteries, and burial sites associated with African American and immigrant communities.
