Cemeteries in Maricopa County (County)
Arizona, United States
Maricopa County, established in 1871, is located in south-central Arizona and is the most populous county in the state.
Named for the Maricopa people, the area was originally inhabited by Indigenous communities including the Hohokam, who built extensive irrigation canals still in use today. The region came under Spanish, Mexican, and then U.S. control following the Gadsden Purchase. American settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, drawn by farming, ranching, and later mining opportunities. Phoenix, now both the state capital and county seat, began as an agricultural settlement and grew rapidly with the arrival of the railroad and construction of water infrastructure. Immigrant communities from Mexico, Europe, and Asia contributed to the area’s expansion.
Cemeteries such as Greenwood Memory Lawn and Pioneer and Military Memorial Park preserve the stories of the county’s diverse and influential population.
