Directions: To reach cemetery coming into Quartzsite from I-10, drive west on Main Street, turn north onto Hi Jolly Lane. The cemetery will be on your left or west side of the lane. The Hi Jolly Monument is very large and can be seen from Main Street to direct you to the cemetery.

Background: Quartzsite is known for its winter season which has gem and mineral shows. More than 1 million folks visit this community each year to take part in these shows. The rest of the year there are only a few residents.

The pyramid like stone was erected by the Arizona Department of Transportation in 1935 to memorialize Hadji Ali, better known as Hi Jolly who worked for the army as a camel driver. The large monument causes many to call this cemetery the Hi Jolly Cemetery, when it is actually the Quartzsite Cemetery. I was not able to find out when it was first established. My guess is it began in the late 1800s when all that was here was mining by miners.

This cemetery is divided into two sections. One section is the older part, with very old and sometimes illegible headstones. It is referred to as the Pioneer Section. The newer section is better maintained and the stones are legible. In the older section there are a dozen or so graves where the headstones are very old and actually illegible, and there are many unknowns.
