Background: The Metlakatla Veterans Memorial Cemetery, located on Annette Island in Alaska, officially opened in 2023 after years of planning and construction.
The idea for the cemetery was initiated in 2017 when Metlakatla's tribal government secured $3.1 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Built on a scenic hillside between ocean and forest, the cemetery features gravesites, crypts, paved paths, and a memorial wall engraved with veterans’ names.
Groundbreaking began in 2020, with construction commencing in 2021 and finishing in spring 2023.
