The cemetery lies in the village of Margraten, about six miles east of Maastricht.

Background: Netherlands American Cemetery occupies 65½ acres of farmland south of the highway. The site was liberated on 13 September 1944 by troops of the U.S. 30th Infantry Division advancing toward the Roer River in Germany as part of the U.S. First Army.

A battlefield cemetery was established here on 10 November 1944 by the U.S. Ninth Army—one of the first used for American soldiers who fell on German soil.

Burials here represent 43 percent of those originally buried in this and other temporary cemeteries in the area. Most gave their lives in airborne and ground operations to liberate eastern Holland, in advances into Germany over the Roer and across the Rhine, and in air operations over these regions.
