The cemetery is near Hamm, about three miles east of Luxembourg City center.

Background: Luxembourg American Cemetery measures 50.5 acres and sits on a site liberated by the U.S. 5th Armored Division on 10 September 1944. A temporary military burial ground was established here on 29 December 1944 during the Ardennes offensive known as the Battle of the Bulge.

The site was later chosen for a permanent cemetery. After the war, the American Graves Registration Service moved temporary burials into the permanent cemetery; reinterment was completed on 16 December 1949. These burials represent 39% of all burials in the region; many others were reinterred in the United States at the direction of surviving families.

Most of those interred here lost their lives in the Battle of the Bulge and in the fighting eastward toward the Rhine in the winter of 1944 and spring of 1945. Memorialized on stone columns are the names of 371 soldiers whose remains were never found. Also interred here is General George S. Patton.
