Forest Home Cemetery is a privately owned cemetery operated by Forest Home Cemetery, Inc.

Cemetery History

Forest Home Cemetery dates back to 1850 when it was the first privately run, non-demoninational cemetery in the City of Milwaukee. Prior to then, there were six cemeteries in the city, a Protestant, a Catholic, a Jewish, and three city-owned graveyards. The three city-owned graveyards were in poor condition, whereby cattle were allowed to roam into and graze.

In 1847, St. Paul's Episcopal Church led the effort to establish the new non-demoninational cemetery, and bought 72 acres at what was then outside the city limits. They raised capital by selling future plots, and eventually raised enough money to develop the land into a garden-style cemetery.

The first burial was Orville Cadwell, buried August 5, 1850.

Today, the cemetery remains active and includes over 117,000 burials.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
