The Old Burying Ground at First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell is said to have been in use from 1788 to 1881 according to a bronze plaque erected on the cemetery gate. However, the land was given in 1779 for both the church and for, "... a place of burial for said Congregation and Inhabitants." It's likely that burials had taken place even before 1788.

In 1866, to address the limited burial space surrounding the churchyard, the church established a larger cemetery, "Prospect Hill Cemetery" located about 1/2 mile to the west.

Among those buried here are Stephen Grover, the first pastor of this church. Both the church and cemetery are listed in the New Jersey State Register of Historic Places.

Cemetery Records

Records listed below were transcribed by David Podmajersky from tombstone inscriptions, and originally published on, "Distant Cousin" a website that went offline around 2016. We were able to salvage this transcription before it became permanently lost. Many of the tombstones were no longer readable by the time he had photographed them.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
