Land on which this cemetery sits is recorded by Atlantic County as being co-owned by the two churches that sit on each end, First United Methodist Church of Mays Landing and The Presbyterian Church of Mays Landing.

According to history published by First United Methodist Church, the land for the church was originally donated by Richard Wescott, Sr. in 1812. Previous church buildings had burnt down. The present-day church was built in 1889.

The name, "Westcott Free Burying Ground" came about because the land donated by Richard Wescott in 1812 included an existing meeting house that had been known as, "Wescott Free Meeting House". That meeting house was located where the present-day brick-construction bank building now stands. The burial ground likely began being used around the time that meeting house was constructed.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
