In 1831 the Massachusetts Horticultural Society purchased 72 acres of mature woodland situated in Watertown and Cambridge for the creation of a "rural cemetery" and experimental garden. On September 24, 1831, a crowd gathered in the Dell, the natural amphitheater located in the heart of the Cemetery, for the ceremony to consecrate Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

Mt Auburn Cemetery became inspiration of the modern cemetery and memorial park. Whereas in the past, cemeteries were laid out in a grid-pattern of graves across a flat plot of land, Mt. Auburn established the model of meandering walks, groves of trees, hills, ponds, flower beds, and running streams.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
