Cemetery History

Oak Lawn Cemetery was formed in 1864 when several prominent men and business men in Fairfield agreed to create a cemetery designed to attract tourists. They purchased 12 acres for $1,200.00 at the present day site. On December 29, 1865 the Oak Lawn Cemetery Association was formed.

Of the first 170 burials that occurred in the cemetery's first few years were reinterments from other cemeteries. More than half came from West Burying Ground, while others came from Greenfield Burying Ground, and Mountain Grove Cemetery. Most of these decedents had lived in Southport, Fairfield, and New York City.

Today, Oak Lawn Cemetery encompasses 100 acres as a non-sectarian cemetery.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
