Cemetery History

Valley Cemetery was opened in 1857 after burials at the adjacent Holy Rude Churchyard neared capacity. Burial space in Valley Cemetery filled up quickly and eventually spilled into the garden of Mar's Wark, and continued there. Today, burials in Mar's Wark garden are now known as, "Mar's Wark Cemetery".

Valley Cemetery is one of the five adjoining cemeteries that make up the greater "Old Town Cemetery". Along with Holy Rude Churchyard and Mar's Wark, there are also Drummond Pleasure Ground, and Ladies' Rock. Snowdon Cemetery, which is also adjacent to these five cemeteries, is generally not considered to be part of the Old Town Cemeteries.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
