Dutcher Cemetery
Burford Township, Brant County, Ontario, Canada

Lot 6, Concession 9, Burford Township, Brant County, Ontario, Canada

Contributed by Murray Fair, Jun 01, 2007, last edited Jun 11, 2007 [murrayfair@rogers.com]. Total records = 17.

To reach this cemetery, travel Brant Hwy # 53, aka Colborne Street West, west from Brantford, to the village of Burford. At the main intersection, there are traffic lights, make a left turn on to Maple Avenue South, travel south for 2.8 kms, watch for the road sign indicating the ninth concession, make a right turn on to the ninth concession, travel west, a distance of 1.2 kms and the cemetery is on the south side of the ninth concession road.

This cemetery is under the jurisdiction of the Corporation of the County of Brant. It is inactive and has been for many years. It is poorly maintained. There is a plaque located in the cemetery and it reads:

"The Dutcher Cemetery. In 1857 a group of worshippers named the Dutcherville Methodist Congregation purchased a half acre on the north-east corner of Lot 6, Concession 9. A cemetery was established here. Though the cemetery was primarily the Dutcher Family burial ground, Smiths, Bowmans, Bennetts and Burtch also rest here. According to the remaining stones the earliest burial was September 28, 1833 and the latest was December 4, 1877. This cemetery is no longer used and it is maintained by Burford Township Cemetery Board." This plaque erected by Burford Township Historical Society, 1997.

I walked this cemetery in May, 2007, reading and recording all existing and legible tombstones there, in order to complete the transcription process.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
