Directions:
From Sherbrooke (Lennoxville), follow Route 108 East about 40 minutes and you will come to the small town of Gould. The Lingwick Cemetery is actually three separate burial grounds.
The oldest one referred to as the Pioneer Cemetery (Main Gate) and is on Route 108 just as you go up the hill out of town. You can either park along the road, or open the gate and drive up the steep hill. The other two sections are only a short distance away on the Scotstown Road (route 257). The lower one I have referred to as the West Gate and the plaque states it as Bury-Gould. The upper one I have called the the East Gate. Church records refer to this section as the "new cemetery in Gould."
Background:
These three graveyards make up the Lingwick Cemetery, in Lingwick Township. It is the final resting place of settlers from Scotland and their descendants. Many came from the Hebridean Islands in the mid 1800s especially from the Isle of Lewis. Although most monuments mark the graves of Scottish settlers and their descendants, there are other burials also.
Lingwick cemetery began in 1837 and all three sections are still used for burials. It overlooks the scenic farm land where these people once lived. It is well maintained by the Lingwick Protestant Cemetery Corporation and most stones are legible.
