Background: Mountain View Cemetery is Vancouver's only cemetery, opened in 1886 to replace burial grounds designated for Stanley Park. The cemetery's establishment marked an important milestone in Vancouver's early municipal development, with the first interment taking place on February 26, 1887 (though complications with weather and transportation had delayed the intended first burial from January).
The cemetery began with its original "Old Section" bounded by Fraser Street, 33rd and 37th Avenues. Expansion occurred systematically as Vancouver grew: the Horne I Addition was acquired in 1901, the Jones farm additions were added in 1910, and the 1919 Addition was established in 1922 to accommodate victims of the Spanish flu pandemic. The final expansion came in 1941 with the Abray Park Addition through a land swap with the Vancouver Park Board.
Key dates in the cemetery's development include its 1886 opening, the 1887 first interment, major expansions in 1901, 1910, 1922, and 1941, and significant modernization between 2005-2009 when new buildings were constructed and the cemetery was officially rededicated in July 2009. Today, the 110-acre cemetery contains over 100,000 grave sites and more than 150,000 interred remains, including significant war graves and victims of historical disasters.
