Background: Dedicated in 1960, Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery is the final resting place of U.S. military dead, most of whom lost their lives during the advance of the U.S. armed forces into Germany during the Fall and Winter of 1944 and the Spring of 1945. Others were lost in air operations over the region.

The site was liberated on September 12, 1944 by troops of the U.S. 1st Infantry Division. A temporary cemetery had been established on September 28, 1944 about 200-300 yards north of the current site. It was later moved to the current site due to aesthetics and beauty.

There is a memorial chapel and museum where inscribed are the names of military war dead missing in action.
