Volcano, Wood County, West Virginia

Total records = 18.
Take Route 50 east out of Parkersburg for 12 miles to Volcano Road.
(Mountwood Park entrance). Turn right onto Volcano Road. and travel
about 2.6 miles to where the road forks at the bottom of the hill.
Take the left fork and travel about 1.5 miles. The cemetery is located
in the woods about 200 yards behind the home of Wayne and Lisa Morrison.
You will need to obtain permission from the Morrisons to cross through
their property to the cemetery.
This was one of Wood County’s forgotten cemeteries until March
of 2011 when a logging company timbering the area stumbled upon
it. Three of the stones where damaged by equipment. The Wood County
Historical Society has repaired the damaged stones and cleared
the brush from the cemetery.
The original cemetery was a 7 acre plot of ground set aside to
be used by the residence of the booming oil town, Volcano. The
town burned in 1879 and most of the residence moved away. Now
the area is all wooded and overgrown. It is not known how many
burials are actually in the cemetery. Death records for some of
the interred also list the name as Volcano Cemetery. Also called
Barris Cemetery by some.
This is a complete reading of all existing headstones
when I walked and transcribed this cemetery on Apr 16, 2011.
