To reach the Greenwood Cemetery, driving west on Main Street in
Palouse, turn left onto Almota Road. After crossing over the bridge
turn left onto Palouse Cove Road, then left onto Union Street. Continue
several blocks and turn right or south onto Wall Street and you
will find the entrance to the cemetery at the intersection with
Park Street. As you enter you will see the sign
on your left.
The first listed burial in the cemetery was in Oct 1878, which
is when it was the Oregon Territory. This means the cemetery must
have been established about that time. There are two other burials
that year, one in November and another in December. After walking
this cemetery and seeing so many vacant spaces in the older sections,
I am convinced there are many unmarked graves, which I do not
account for. I will continue to try however to see if I can find
more early records.
I tried unsuccessfully to obtain sexton files to compare my reading
with, so I would be able to find unmarked grave information. I
first visited the city hall, where they had no records and they
directed me to Kramer Funeral Home, who has been given the responsibility
of maintaining the burial map. At this time this is the only record
that does exists. I visited the funeral home and found out that
this map is too large to easily make a copy of and only contains
burial info.
This cemetery is owned and maintained by the city of Palouse.
They do a great job of the phycical care of the cemetery. I consider
it very sad that they did not find it important to record all
of the information about who is buried in this cemetery down through
the years for future reference.
Since the cemetery is so large, I tried to divide it into sections
on a map. Please do not hold me to
what I have, it is only to get try to show the general area of
the burial. When I said NW actually that should just be North
Section as it spreads out across the whole north end of the cemetery,
but is northeast of the entrance road. This seems to be the newest
section developed. The middle divisions for the east and west
sections are not accurate as there was no dividing line to use.
I think they are divided in the general area of the maintenance
buildings.
I found a transcription of this cemetery, completed by Weston
and Carrie Lartigue in 1972. Any entry followed by an * asterisk
came from their work and this means that I found not marker or
stone for it.
I visited this cemetery on May 29, Jun 02 and Jun 09, 2007 and
read all existing and legible markers and stones, using a digital
camera. I have a photo of all existing stones and markers to those
dates. Additional records will be added from other sources as
I am able to find them.
