Mount Saint Michael Cemetery is located NE of the city of Spokane WA.
It can be reached by driving east on Francis Ave. to Freya St., turn left,
or north, on Freya and drive about 1 mile, to Lincoln Rd. Turn right,
or east, on Lincoln Rd and stay on that road. It turns into St. Michael
Rd. and is about one more mile. The cemetery lies on the left side of
the road.
Mount Saint Michael Cemetery is owned by the Oregon Province of the
Society of Jesus (Jesuit order). It was dedicated on Jan 6, 1916 and
is a Jesuit only cemetery. This would be priests, brothers and other
Jesuits, such as brothers who died before they took their vows or seminarians
who died before they were ordained priests. The first burial was Brother
Joseph Finello, who died in Spokane on Jun 24, 1915, and was buried
in a temporary grave at the entrance to the cemetery. There are others
who died before him and were moved at a later date to this cemetery.
One has a very picturesque view from the cemetery as you overlook the
area. It is bordered by evergreen and deciduous trees, and is kept in
immaculate condition. The atmosphere is quite serene.
The headstones many times have the Latin name on them. I have tried
to list as many of the translations as I could find. I do not have all.
I also have listed some abbreviations, which I used to conserve space.
See Abbrev. page
I have transcribed these readings from various sources. I was assisted
during the first physical reading by Vicki Morris & Matt Morris as we
copied all the headstones by hand, which we did in 1998. I then typed
those and compared them with what I received from the sexton records.
Mostly the Sexton records were names, not many dates. I have since returned
twice to check the records and add more burials. I now have a digital
photo of all headstones which I am willing to share. ©1998/2006.
