Fairview Cemetery
Medical Lake, Spokane County, Washington
Lat: 47° 36' 51"N, Lon: 117° 42' 17"W
Contributed by Maggie Rail, Dec 27, 1999, updated Mar 28, 2005 [mrail@asisna.com].
Total records = 81.
It is located north of Medical Lake on the south side of Thorpe Road,
about 1/2 mile west of Brooks Road in the NE 1/4 of NW 1/4 of section
1, Township 24 N, R40.
Plat of this cemetery was filed with Spokane County
on Sep 05, 1883, showing J Rockhold as surveyor. At this time,
there was set off a portion of the west end of the cemetery to be used
as a potter's field.
Fairview Cemetery is also at times called Jerue
Cemetery, due to the fact that the Jerue family owned this cemetery
for a number of years. This cemetery adjoins Medical Lake Cemetery, which is immediately west
of Fairview Cemetery.
It is said that the land belonged formerly to Frank Garret. At some time
after 1908, the cemetery became the property of the Clyde Jerue Funeral
Home of Medical Lake, and when he died, his widow, Mrs. Emma Jerue, inherited
it, she being in 1960 Mrs. Emma Manning, residing at Medical Lake.
Mrs. Manning stated in March, 1960 that records of the burials in this
cemetery were kept by the Clyde Jerue Funeral Home; that the funeral home
was willed by Clyde Jerue to his brother, Darrell Jerue of Jerue Funeral
Home at Cheney, Wash., and the records were turned over to the latter
company. In March, 1960, the Jerue Funeral Home of Cheney stated that
they do not have the records of burials In Fairview Cemetery (or Jerue
Cemetery.)
Apparently only a few lots were sold in Fairview Cemetery, and the oldest
death shown on a grave stone is 1925. Most of the burials appear to have
been from 1925 to 1930.
There are a great many graves that are unmarked in the section designated
as a potter's field, although some have small concrete markers, and some
have metal markers. Some of the concrete markers, which are about 4" x
16" set flush on the ground, have disintegrated and can not be deciphered.
The inscriptions from grave stones and from the metal markers appear
as follows for those able to be read in 1960. I am told by many that this
is considered abandoned in 1999 with some having been moved or so deteriorated
that they cannot be found.
I first transcribed much of this from "Rural Spokane County Cemeteries" Vol.
1, Pub 1961 by EWGS. I have later found this cemetery and read all that I could find. I again revisited this cemetery on Sep 24, 2004 and have a photo of all existing and legible stones or markers. Those with an asterisk* are from the previous readings. All others I have a photo of the marker that still exists.
