A few miles upstream from the foot of the Rattlesnake Grade is a lonely
grave on the old Mallory place, now owned by the Bezonas of the Grande
Ronde River. The area was once an irrigated field, but has returned now
to grass. The marble marker at the grave has been turned over making it
difficult to locate in the high grass. The legend on the stone reads:
Elvira Neal, age 82 years. It has been stated that she died in 1885. She
was the grandmother of the late Harve Mallory, and of Bertha Kiesecker
who now lives in Anatone. It was believed that Elvira, who lived alone
in the remote area, had been hoeing weeds in the field and was overcome
by the heat. When she had crawled into the water flume to cool off she
had died there.
(Note: Bertha Kiesecker passed away 12 Jul 1991 - J.B.)
