Samuel Ayers (Ayres) and his wife Catherine were early settlers in Asotin County. Samuel arrived there in 1878 with his wife, sons, Sam Jr., and Ben and three daughters.

Two years after he met an unfortunate death. It is believed that he froze to death on way from Asotin (about 12 miles away) to his home during severe winter weather. He was buried about 1/4 mile up the Ayers Gulch from the home.

The grave site isn't marked or fenced. The approximate site, according to his descendants, is located in SW 1/4 of NW 1/4, Sec 32, T9N, R46E.
