Cemetery History

Greenwood Cemetery was established in the 1940s on the old Bedford Fairgrounds, located adjacent to Oakwood and Longwood cemeteries.

Bedford's original cemetery was Longwood. Just prior to the Civil War, the City developed land to the south and east of Longwood Cemetery, and named it Oakwood Cemetery. The three cemeteries are often referred to as a single cemetery, under the name, "Longwood, Oakwood, and Greenwood Cemeteries". It's also just shortened to "Longwood Cemetery".

Section Four of Greenwood Cemetery was opened in 1997. It is projected that the currently available space will last until Bedford's tri-centennial birthday, around 2050.

City of Bedford Records

Records below were acquired from the City of Bedford on December 10, 2019. Dates of death range from 1863 to 2019.

NOTE: there are many records which appear to have the gender incorrect, for example there is a "LEFTWICH, Lucy Mary Holdren" listed as male. These came from the City this way, we made no attempt to correct them.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
