Nus Cemetery
Limestone County, Texas

Lat: 31° 33' 25"N, Lon: 96° 43' 40"W

Contributed by Bruce Jordan, Aug 10, 2003 [bjordan@glade.net]. Total records = 9.

From Highway 164 between Mart and Groesbeck, go north on FM 339 about 1 mile until you see a large corral on the west side of the road. The cemetery is located behind the corral. The remaining markers are at the base of clumps of trees just behind the corral.

Sol Nussbaum donated land for a school, church, and cemetery thus starting the small community named after him "Nus". The cemetery originally served the communities of Nus, Kirk, and Ben Hur. There were approximately 100 graves in the cemetery.

As the Nus community declined, so did the cemetery. Inez Folly stated that Mrs. Adkinson of Ben Hur was the last person buried there in 1930. Gradually the tombstones were either knocked down or trampled by cattle and tractors. The only tombstones remaining are those which were protected by fences built around several family plots which allowed trees to grow keeping the tractors away. Today the cemetery is located behind a corral and is totally unrecognizable.

Marker present in 1950, but not found when cemetery was read in 2003 *

Linda Jordan and I read this cemetery in Apr 2003, which includes all existing headstones.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
