The Elk Vale Cemetery was on a wagon route between Pierre and Deadwood, SD during the Gold Rush of the Black Hills. It was granted by warranty of deed in 1892 by Mr. & Mrs. David Bennett, who had owned the property. It is referred to in various records a Bennett Cemetery, Elk Creek Cemetery, Bend Cemetery, Kammerer Cemetery and Elk Vale Cemetery. Leman Wood was buried here in 1889, the first record found of a person buried in this cemetery. There were transients and indigent people who were buried here without markers, etc. The cemetery is in beautiful condition. It is maintained and funded by local residents on a voluntary basis.

These records were compiled in July 2000 from gravestones, sexton records and maps, county death records, mortuary records and Echoes Thru The Valley (a local history compiled by area residents in 1968) and old local newspapers. Everywhere possible dates were verified by more than one source. If there was a conflict between two sources, I used the following criteria to ascertain the correct data: gravestone, if original, Meade County and Pennington County death records, Behren's Morturary and Anderson Mortuary records, Echoes Thru the Valley, Elk Vale Cemetery map, personal infromation from family members, Black Hills Weekly or Black Hills Weekly Journal.

cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
