Mt. Sinai Cemetery is owned and operated by Mt. Sinai Cemetery Association.

History

Mt. Sinai Cemetery was founded in 1854. It came about because there had been a shortage of Jewish burial grounds in Philadelphia by the 1850s. A group of citizens came together and formed the Mt. Sinai Cemetery Association on June 9, 1854. They purchased a 7 acre plot along Bridge St, near Cottage. A chapel was added in 1892. Today, the cemetery stands at 17.5 acres.

The first burial conducted by the new cemetery actually occurred about 5 months earlier, in January of 1854, that of Moses Sternberger. However, records show that a few burials had occurred on this plot of land as far back as 1809.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
