The old section of Neffs Union Cemetery is on the northeast side of Hwy 329 at the intersection with and north of Neffs Laurys Rd, across from the Union Church. The new section is on the northwest side of Rte 873, southwest of the Union Church.
The Neffs Union Cemetery was established in the mid 1700s, and it had 21 rows of graves with a total of 715 legible stones. There are approximately 1500 to 1600 graves, so this means that less than half are marked now. The oldest legible stone is Vallentine Remeley and is dated 1770. Nearly all the stones in this section have German inscriptions, which were translated by Raymond Hollenbach in 1959. This makes up what is now the Old Section.
This cemetery is owned and maintained jointly by a combined committee under both the United Church of Christ and the Union Lutheran Evangelical Church. At this time the contact person is Diane Selig, Director of Business Affairs. Phone 610-767-6961. This cemetery is still actively used.
The New section, which is situated between the Union Lutheran Evangelical Church and the Union United Church of Christ, came into being in 1866, after both congregations agreed to lay out a new section to the rear of UCC church, because the current burial place was becoming filled to capacity.
I walked and completed reading this cemetery in the summer of 2006. This contains all existing and legible markers.- Linda Roth
