Oakland Cemetery is a not-for-profit corporation owned by plot holders and overseen by a Board of Directors.

History

Oakland Cemetery was established in December 1863 on a wheat field originally owned by James Clark. It wasn't incorporated into a non-profit corporation until March 30, 1984.

The first burial was in August of 1864, that of an infant son of the Carson family. However, many bodies were exhumed and moved from St. Bernard's and Greenwood Cemeteries, accounting for many burials that date earlier.

In 1949, the Congregation of Beth Israel Synagogue entered an agreement with the Cemetery Association and a portion of the cemetery containing about 400 plots was set aside for the Jewish Community.

At one point, State Route 80 ran through the middle of Oakland Cemetery.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
