Bushyhead Cemetery
Oologah, Rogers County, Oklahoma

East of Tulsa, OK on Interstate 44, get off on 193 E Ave. Go north about 1 mile to a stop light. Turn east and look to the south, the drive is just around the corner.

This cemetery is named for the Bushyhead Family. They were Cherokee Indian. The last burial was in 1972, according to the family that now owns the land, she had an Indian Ceremony. Not a word of English. There is a mound of dirt with no marker, which is believed to be hers.

All of the readable stones are about in the middle of the cemetery, next to each other, they all have a foot stone. There are several more people buried here, no markers of any kind.

There was a Trading Post close to the cemetery. It is believed to be on the Trail Of Tears. The old wagon trail still exits where they came to forge the river. One family member told the story, of his grandfather plowing the field close to the cemetery. He thought he was outside the boundary of the cemetery, but plowed up some bones.

It is thought that the cemetery may be larger than what is inside the fence. One needs to get permission from the family that owns the property. It is located on private property behind locked gates.

There is no maintenance and the grass and weeds are high during the growing season. It is now fenced. I walked & recorded the cemetery Sept. 29, 2002
