Wagar Cemetery
Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio

Saint Charles & Detroit Avenues, Lakewood, OH 44107

Lat: 41° 29' 05"N, Lon: 81° 47' 55"W

This cemetery was located on the south side of Detroit Avenue just west of Belle Avenue at Saint Charles Avenue. The area where the cemetery was is now the parking lot for the Lakewood Park Hospital.

The Wagar Cemetery was established by in 1820 by Mars Wagar shortly after he settled in Rockport, Illinois which is now Lakewood. It was established as a private family burial site. The first burial was Lucy D. Wagar in 1826. By 1828, Mars Wagar had extended the use of the cemetery to his friends and neighbors. The last burial was about 1891, and the cemetery was closed in 1894.

Gradually the cemetery became more and more neglected. In the 1920s, an effort was made to preserve it, but the City of Lakewood and the property owners (Wagar descendents) could not agree on a course of action. Family members reinterred some of the bodies into nearby cemeteries amd many of the stones had disappeared and the others were no longer in their original places.

In the mid 1950s the city purchased the property from the Wagar heirs to provide municipal off street parking for the Lakewood Hospital. On Oct 25, 1957 the whole Wagar Cemetery was moved, along with 84 unidentified bodies, which were reinterred in a mass grave to section 2, lot 301 grave 5, to the Lakewood Park Cemetery, Detroit MI 22025. One marker exists for the 84, but there were many more individual burials.

This is not a complete listing of burials in this cemetery. The records below were provided by contributors to Interment.net. Last edited Oct 23, 2007. Total records = 9.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
