Hatch Cemetery
Lent Hill, Steuben County, New York

Lat: 42° 31' 22"N, Lon: 77° 25' 52"W"
Cohocton Township

Contributed by René M North, Jul 04, 2005 [remnorth.fl@verizon.net]. Total records = 23.

From Lent Hill drive west on Kirkland-Lent Hill Road for about 1/4 mile. The cemetery is on the north side of the road across from the Lent Cemetery.

This is an old abandoned family cemetery, which appears to have started in 1826 with the burial of Mathew Hatch. It is now owned by the City of Cohocton.

The Hatch Cemetery is gated and set back from the road inside a wheat field. When I first visited it I found it had trees and 6' high weeds growing in it so that people couldn't even see the stones and certainly couldn't tell it was a cemetery. This disturbed me.

After I looked into who was actually buried in the cemeteries in the Lent Hill area and discovered that the first settler on Lent Hill was buried in one of these neglected cemeteries, I became even more angry about their neglect.

I'm now on a mission to fix them up, even if I do live in Florida. I contacted the town supervisor and insisted they cut down the trees in the Hatch Cemetery and clean it up. They only have the budget to mow each cemetery once a year, which by now is weeds, and no grass.

There are at least 10 stones leaning against the fence surrounding the Hatch Cemetery that are no where near where they were originally placed. I have a commitment from the local funeral home to reset the stones, but I'd like to find the correct locations before doing so.

Entries followed by an asterisk * are those for which I found a stone and have a photo of it. This is a complete list up to Aug 31, 2004. I continue to research and will add more if I find it at a later date.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
