Located at the southwest corner of the I-25 freeway and Gibson off ramp.

Today the rock sign in the cemetery reads "San Jose del El Rosario Cemetery". This cemetery and a nearby plot of land were originally on the outskirts of town. When the I-25 freeway was built [sometime in the 1960's], the other plot of land started burials and was named the Benino Cemetery.

This cemetery have been badly vandalized and it is likely that not more than 25% of the burials are recognizable. Many of the graves were marked only with wooden crosses and if there were ever names painted on them, they have weathered off.

A high percentage of the markers are homemade and cast in concrete with the names and dates scratched before the concrete set. Concrete does not hold up well in our weather of snow in the winter and hot summers. Where there are commercial markers, they seem to be less likely to be damaged although even these have been toppled from their bases.

Many graves were outlined with field stones, or a cross in stones on top of the grave. Other graves were indicated only by metal mortuary markers from which the cards with data are gone. Garcia and Gabaldon Mortuary (still in business) are the most frequent markers. In general, the cemetery gives the appearance of being abandoned. There are fewer than 2 burials a year here. The cemetery is owned and maintained by the city of Albuquerque.

I have transcribed this cemetery from tombstone readings which were done in the summer of 2002, by a group of volunteers.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
