Woodland Cemetery was founded in 1855 as the "West Newark Cemetery", but had been referred to by locals as "Germany Cemetery" due to the majority of early burials being that of ethnic Germans. Now covering approximately 36.5 acres and over 80,000 burials, Woodland Cemetery remains active. Woodland Cemetery is owned by its plot owners and governed by a board of directors who also are plot owners.
