The cemetery is on the Bull Homestead, on Highway 16 (old Canton Rd) in Vaughn, Mississippi. It is approximately 11 miles east of Yazoo City. Traveling eastward, the cemetery is on the left, the Bull home on the right side of the roadway.

The Bull Cemetery is still an active burial ground for the Bull family and the families related to the Bull family by marriage, friendship, slaves who worked with the Bull family on the plantation or by acts of God that brought relative strangers to this rural farming land to pass into the next life. There are westward bound frontier people who stopped for assistance to help with the sick and dying family members. Those who did not survive were buried in the graveyard.

There is more than one infant buried in this cemetery due to the illnesses for which doctors had no cures during those times. The Bull family cared for the sick and buried the dead. Once the survivors were able, they continued their westward journeys. One of those unknown burials is an Confederate soldier, who was mortally wounded during a battle in the area.

These is no sign, simply a collection of headstones or tombstones within a wrought iron fence. Once the fence was made of brick which were manfactured by slaves who worked on the Bull Plantation. The brick wall fell years ago and was replaced by the iron fence. Burials outside the fence line are not marked, unfortunately. There are tombstones dated in the 1830s.

Susie Bull and her brother, John Ellison Bull, Jr., are the last survivors of the Bull family to live on the Bull Homestead. They continue to maintain the homestead and the cemetery.

The Bull Cemetery existence was threatened by road construction several years back. Due to a write-in campaign and a website presence about the danger of loss of the honored burial ground, Mississippi government officials agreed that it should be preserved. The Bull Homestead and the Bull Cemetery are now part of the National Registry.

There are about believed to be 150 persons buried in the Bull cemetery. There are some whose graves are not known to us now.

cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
